LSU-UNO Levee Monitoring group

Whereas near-surface causes of floodwall collapse (such as overtopping  and undercutting) are directly visible and are well  understood, the deeper causes of floodwall collapse (such as underseepage, overpressure, and small-scale variations in soil strength) are not predictable.

Building a 100% strong levee is impossible, but even the smallest failure is intolerable. Geotechnical studies are accurate, but prohibitively expensive. We forsee a new approach to monitoring flood protection barriers. Predictive and Proactive. Not reactive.

We will

To this end, a joint coalition between the LSU Department of Geology and Geophysics and the UNO Departments of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Physics, and Mathematics has been created. Please take some time to look over our work, and let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!

WAFB in Baton Rouge recently did a story on our work.  We are in part 2.
